Free Solar Panel Schemes – How Do They Work

Free solar panels

Free solar panel schemes are becoming increasingly popular as more and more solar panel installation companies are starting to offer them. In a free solar panel scheme, a solar provider will design, install and maintain a free solar panel system on a homeowner’s roof as long as the roof meets their criteria. They will fund the solar panel installation using payments from the government-backed Feed-in Tariff scheme.

The Feed-in Tariff scheme was introduced in April 2010 by the government as a way of giving incentives to homeowners to install solar panels and help meet the UK carbon emission targets. The Tariff ensures that energy providers will pay you for each unit of electricity that your solar panels produce. Though the introduction of the Feed-in Tariff (FIT) it has encouraged many more homeowners to invest in a solar panel system, it also encouraged solar panel providers to launch free solar panel programmes.

Solar panel installations can be expencive and homeowners who cannot afford or who do not want the initial outlay of cost can have a free solar panel system installed on their home. You can benefit from the free electricity that their solar panels produce. You will also reduce your electricity bills and protect yourself against rising energy prices. By using clean green electricity produced by your roof free solar panels, you need to buy less electricity from your energy provider, resulting in lower bills. You can also future proof yourself against any future rises in energy prices. As prices continue to rise, your savings will be greater.

Under a free solar panel scheme, you will not receive any money from the FIT as the free solar panel provider will take this to cover their installation and maintenance costs. You do however benefit from being able to use all of the free electricity that the free solar panel generates with no cost at all to yourself. Free solar panels mean free electricity.

Many companies also provide the option for you to buy the solar panels from them in the future, and should you choose to do this, the FIT payments will go to you instead. The price of buying the solar panels will vary from company to company and according to the solar panel type. Another factor which will affect the price will be how long your free solar panel system has been installed. Usually the longer you have had them on your roof for, the less they will cost to buy.

Generally to qualify for the free solar panel scheme you need to meet certain criteria. These can vary slightly with each company but will normally involve roof size, roof angle, roof direction and location in the country. You must also be a homeowner to qualify. Your solar panel supplier will be able to discuss their company criteria with you to check if you are eligible for the free solar panel scheme.

Free solar panel schemes are a very practical way of accessing the advantages of solar panels with none of the costs. As design, installation and maintenance are all dealt with by the solar panel supplier. Free solar panel schemes are an easy way to get free electricity, lower your electricity bills and reduce your carbon emissions.
